New episode of our series of consumer tests. As a reminder, every week we test products on sale in the five supermarket chains (Delhaize, Colruyt, Aldi, Lidl and Carrefour) by comparing the major brands with “white goods” or distributor brands. The final score for each product is out of 20 points: 2.5 points for the appearance of the packaging, the appearance of the product, the nutritional value and the readability of the label, and 5 points for the taste and the quality- price. This week, we tested strawberry ice cream.
Appearance of the packaging: overall, it was quite successful, except for Colruyt and Aldi. We found it very “cheap”, and it really lacked research and modernity. For the rest, it was therefore correct, with a good mark to put forward for Carrefour, even if the big brand, Carte d’Or, had the preference of our panel.
The great brand test: two references outclass the competition for chocolate ice cream (COMPARATIVE)
Appearance of the product: the very (too) bright and industrial pink of Lidl and Colruyt ice creams did not really tempt us, it was nothing natural. Same with the smell, it was more like a strawberry yogurt for children. The color was more normal for the Intermarché product, but we had the same concern for the smell. For the rest, it seemed much more natural, with some products with strawberry pieces, even if it does not please everyone.
Nutritional value: a lot of sugar, sometimes dyes and a series of E… in the recipe, we do not recommend a tub of ice cream with each meal, obviously.
Legibility of the label: it was not legible enough for the Colruyt product, unfortunately. For the rest, it was pretty good, even very good for the big brand.
Our big brand test on vanilla ice cream: a hands down winner! (COMPARATIVE)
Taste: the bad pupils of the dimension for the aspect of the product, Lidl and Colruyt, are sanctioned for the same reasons. The ice cream tasted more of the industrial strawberry flavors rather than the natural fruit. It was also far too sweet. For Aldi, the appearance was more pleasant with the pieces and the taste was more like a real strawberry flavor, but there was a difficult to identify, and especially unpleasant followingtaste. For Carrefour, the problem is that it lacked taste. It was really tasteless. For Intermarché, it was already more pleasant and less sweet, even if a bit too “chemical”. For Delhaize, it’s not worth their strawberry ice cream, acclaimed last year, but it was still quite successful. Finally, the great brand justifies its status, with a unique taste compared to others.
The great brand test takes advantage of the good weather: we tested the water ice cream (COMPARATIVE)
Value for money: here are the prices in order for a one-litre or one-and-a-half-litre jar: Carte d’Or (€7.45!), Delhaize (€3.45), Intermarché (2 €.59), Colruyt and Carrefour (€2.49), Aldi (€2.19) and Lidl (€2.15). The big brand is therefore very good, but also very expensive.
