Ranking the Best Chocolate Éclairs from Supermarket Brands: A Comprehensive Consumer Test

2023-09-02 14:41:00

New episode of our series of consumer tests. As a reminder, every week we test products on sale in the five supermarket chains (Delhaize, Colruyt, Aldi, Lidl and Carrefour) by comparing the major brands with “white goods” or distributor brands. The final score for each product is out of 20 points: 2.5 points for the appearance of the packaging, the appearance of the product, the nutritional value and the readability of the label, and 5 points for the taste and the quality- price. This week, we tested chocolate éclairs.

Packaging appearance: Overall, it mightn’t be simpler: transparent hard plastic packaging. It is therefore difficult to give a different note to each, but Aldi and Colruyt have been able to play on the logos and a solid and well-placed label to make a small difference.

The great test of brands: the Cent Wafers face strong competition for back-to-school lunch boxes (COMPARATIVE)

Appearance of the product: the worst éclair was the one offered by Lidl. Not very generous in chocolate, very soft and without an attractive smell, it was missed. For Delhaize, it was already more gourmet, but the chocolate had a very special texture, with a kind of gelatin all around. For Carrefour, the smell was pleasant, but the dough was really too soft. For Intermarché, the dough was a little soft and moist, but the smell of chocolate and dough was good, and the cream in generous quantity. Finally, Colruyt and Aldi ticked all the boxes.

Nutritional value: Nutri-Score D for everyone, we are obviously talking regarding a very sweet and fatty pastry.

The great brand test: for Candlemas, the cheapest pancakes are the best! (COMPARATIVE)

Legibility of the label: for Delhaize and Lidl, it was really insufficient and illegible. To be reviewed absolutely. For the rest, it was correct, but it’s the kind of packaging where it is always difficult to navigate.

Taste: objectively, nothing beats the éclairs of real pastries. The only one we really liked comes from Colruyt. It’s almost the only one where we tasted a minimum of pastry cream. Also, the chocolate and texture of the dessert was nice. Intermarché ranks just behind because the cream really lacked taste. Carrefour gets just the average, and the others all fail. The worst ? The one sold at Lidl. The chocolate was quite good, but the texture of the dough was very elastic, and the cream was weak and tasteless.

Value for money: overall, we are in the same price range for everyone, between two and three euros for two éclairs. They were all a similar size, by the way. Here are the details in order: Aldi and Colruyt (€2.09), Lidl (2.19), Carrefour (€2.75), Intermarché (€2.77) and Delhaize (€2.87). FYI, there are promotions in the next few days at Intermarché (2 + 2 free) and Delhaize (3 + 1 free).
