2023-05-23 15:09:00

This first ranking of the best cities in Europe is an important and timely analysis. Indeed, the continent is ahead of the rest of the world in post-pandemic tourism recovery. Best Cities rankings are determined by analyzing each city’s performance across a wide range of factors that have consistently shown positive correlations with attracting jobs, investment and/or visitors to cities. Of the hundred metropolises included in the ranking, four major Belgian cities have found a place.

Brussels in 12th place

Resonance Consultancy, which draws up these rankings, places Brussels as the 12th best European city, while on a global scale, the capital barely reaches 58th position, just behind Montreal. The site describes the city as “an abundance of breathtaking architecture”, with the Grand Place certainly being one of the most beautiful in the world.

47th place for the city of Ghent

Located in the Flemish region, the city of Ghent is the second in the country to appear in the ranking. The city, touted for its museums and universities, is currently building a village to accommodate Ukrainian refugees.

A little below, Antwerp takes 50th place

Known for its port, “the town really shines through its quaint cobbled houses, secret courtyards and alleyways that all lead to the Gothic beauty of Notre Dame Cathedral,” Resonance Consultancy says on its site. Antwerp, however, is in the throes of a violent war between drug cartels who are currently trying to control the main port of entry into Europe.

Far behind, Liège reached 88th place

Less charming than Brussels or Ghent, the city of Liège is known in particular for its “Les Ardentes” festival, organized each year in July.

Resonance Consultancy advises visitors to “take the Montagne de Bueren and its 374 steps with a grueling 30% drop, originally built so that soldiers from the Coteaux de la Citadelle could quickly get to the city center. October to see the entire staircase lined with candles.”
