A session marked by red flags and a deluge

Leclerc 1’16″564 on medium tyres, and that put him ahead of the Red Bull drivers. Sergio Pérez was second by two tenths, just ahead of Max Verstappen, and both men had soft tyres.

Fernando Alonso set the best mark in 1’16″353 on soft rubber, and Valtteri Bottas beat him in 1’16″330 on medium tyres. But Carlos Sainz did better on the same compound with a time of 1’15″859.

Alonso improved in 1’16″250 and Oscar Piastri took fourth place. Lando Norris came back just behind Sainz, but it was Verstappen who put everyone in agreement in 1’15″333, still on tires tender. Charles Leclerc took the second fastest time in the medium category and Pérez third in the soft category.

Pierre Gasly, whose problem of the morning was solved, took the sixth provisional time in medium ahead of Alonso. Pérez then progressed with the fastest compounds, in 1’15″230. Sainz took over the third fastest time.

Gasly then beat the best time by six thousandths of a second. Verstappen then improved to 1’14.726, a time he held for several minutes, before Leclerc put on the soft tires and dislodged him in 1’14.576.

Leclerc regained control but not for long, Sainz setting a 1’14″196. Nevertheless, the battle for the Ferrari drivers raged at the top of the standings as rain threatened a little more. The Monegasque regained the best time in 1 ’14″094.

Verstappen set the second fastest time at 0″074 from Leclerc, just before the engine of Nico Hülkenberg’s Haas failed on the straight. The single-seater was emitting thick smoke at the edge of the track, and the red flag was unfurled.

The session resumed for a few minutes, notably allowing Alex Albon to take tenth fastest time in the advanced Williams FW45. But the joy was short-lived for the pilots as Esteban Ocon’s Alpine A523 suffered damage.

The red flag was once again deployed, once again complicating the race simulations for the drivers. There were 43 minutes left when the session resumed, after the Frenchman’s single-seater was evacuated from the track.

While many drivers were on long stints, the Mercedes drivers decided to go for a fast run. George Russell set the best time in 1’13″745, immediately beaten by Lewis Hamilton in 1’13″718!

The end of the session took place in apocalyptic weather, with a lot of wind, clouds and a sky with orange lights. The track was declared wet as drops arrived, and it was finally a deluge that fell on the circuit five minutes from the end of the session.

At the very end of the session, several drivers put on the intermediate tires before the rain, but the Aston Martin, Ferrari and Alfa Romeo drivers also tested the intermediate rubbers after the deluge hit the circuit.

Hamilton and Russell therefore conclude the session in the first two places, after an insignificant day. Sainz is third ahead of Alonso and Leclerc, then Verstappen, Bottas, Pérez, Stroll and Gasly.

Piastri is 11th ahead of Magnussen and Norris, then Zhou and the AlphaTauri. Albon and Sargeant supervise Ocon, who rode very little during the session, and Hülkenberg, victim of an engine problem at the start of the session.
