Rangnick: Manchester United are 6 years behind Liverpool

LIVERPOOL – Interim coach Ralf Rangnick said his side, who lost 4-0 at Anfield on Tuesday, are six years behind Liverpool and need a major rebuild if they are to compete for titles once more.

United lost 5-0 to Liverpool at Old Trafford in October, before Liverpool beat them once more in the second leg on Tuesday to return Jurgen Klopp’s team to the top of the Premier League.

“It’s embarrassing, disappointing, maybe even humiliating,” Rangnick said. “We have to accept that they’ve been outperforming us for six years now, when Jurgen Klopp came (to take over), the situation at the club changed and rose to a new level not just as a team but for the club and the city. What should happen to us in the upcoming transfers.”

The German coach said that Liverpool improved in each transfer period following contracting with Klopp in 2015, and this has paid off in the squad, which now includes “25 Formula 1 cars”.

Rangnick is not expected to remain in charge of United next season, as Ajax Amsterdam coach Erik ten Hag is likely to take over.

With the contracts of many players expiring, Rangnick, who also serves as an advisor at the club, said there would be significant transfers to and from the club.

“For me, it’s clear that there will be six, maybe seven, eight or even ten new players…I don’t know exactly, and before you sign these players, you have to know what kind of game you want to play? What kind of football does the coach want? What is new is his introduction to then bring the appropriate player for this method in every position.”

“There will be a rebuilding for sure,” said the former RB Leipzig coach.
