The summit on Ukraine scheduled for Saturday at the American base in Ramstein, Germany, has been postponed. He would be the first at the leader level. No new date has been indicated for now. But in the meantime the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, is in Croatia for a Ukraine-Southeastern Europe summit. And tomorrow he should be in Rome. In the evening he should see Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni for a dinner at Villa Doria Pamphili. On Friday he will be received in audience by the Pope in the Vatican. In addition to the stop in Rome, the Ukrainian president is also expected to reach other European capitals in the next few days. On the field, meanwhile, Moscow’s Defense Ministry announces that it has regained control of two locations in the Kursk region, where the Ukrainians had arrived in last summer’s surprise offensive. While news is arriving from Ukraine of an attack that would have hit a site in the Bryansk region where ammunition, including North Korean ammunition, was stored. At Ramstein Zelensky would have liked to present “the plan for victory, clear and concrete steps towards a just end to the war”, of the conflict that began with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on 24 February two years ago. A plan already shared with American President Joe Biden, who yesterday postponed the planned visits to Germany and Angola “to supervise the preparations and response to Hurricane Milton”.
Meanwhile, at the Dubrovnik summit Zelensky meets heads of state, prime minister or foreign ministers of twelve countries (Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Greece, Kosovo, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia and Turkey). With Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic, Zelensky reports that he spoke about «assistance and cooperation in defense, humanitarian demining, rehabilitation of our children and wounded soldiers, recovery of Ukraine and European integration». Signed, he specifies, “a long-term cooperation and support agreement between our countries” so “together we will develop cooperation between our defense industries” and “Croatia will continue to supply equipment”.
Kiev remains highly dependent on the USA from the point of view of military armaments, but less than a month before the elections for the White House, this support – as the Washington Post wrote in recent days – remains uncertain in terms, while the attention on the war is waning amid the new escalation in the Middle East. And yesterday Kiev made it known that it no longer expects a second peace summit before the US presidential elections. Ukraine and the Middle East were supposed to be at the center of the meeting that had been announced for Saturday in Berlin between Biden, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. He skipped the Ramstein summit together, Berlin confirmed. The NATO Defense Ministerial is scheduled for 17 and 18 October in Brussels.
