Rome ∙ Forest fires have burned 59,000 hectares of forest land in Italy so far this year, according to estimates. According to the study released by the Italian Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA), this much forest was burnt during the period from January 1 to August 6. 93 percent of the destroyed forest land is in the Sicily and Calabria regions of southern Italy.
The reality is that many of the fires in the country’s forests are man-made, as the summer continues to be hot. Drones have been deployed in forest areas to detect arsonists. The drone has detected 32 people who deliberately set fires in the Calabria region in the last two weeks.
A 10-year-old boy was among those who set fire to vegetation here, Calabria Region President Roberto Ocuito revealed. He also posted footage of the incident in Soongri, Vibo Valentia province on his Facebook page. In the video, the child can be seen running towards his grandfather who was in the vehicle when he realized he was being followed by the drone.
