Kathmandu ∙ Ram Chandra Paudel (78) of the Nepali Congress was elected as the President of Nepal. He was the general candidate of the eight-member coalition including the CPN (Maoist Centre) and got 33,802 votes. Former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s CPN-UML candidate Subhash Chandra Nembang was defeated. He got 15,518 votes. Both are former speakers.
This is the third presidential election in Nepal since the end of the monarchy in 2008 and becoming a republic. The current president Bidya Devi Bhandari’s term will end this coming Sunday.
