  • Ralph Caspers on the topic of the HISTORY AWARD: “Dealing with what water means for all of us is more important than ever today.”

The high school students in grades 6 to 11, who came from Trier in Rhineland-Palatinate to attend the award ceremony as part of the DOK.fest Munich, were welcomed yesterday followingnoon at the Hochschule für Fernsehen und Film (HFF) by Ralph Caspers and Emilia Flint, who this year won the patronage, as well as the moderator of the event Nina Eichinger, Kathrin Palesch, the managing director of A+E Networks Germany, and the members of the HISTORY AWARD jury Maya Reichert (DOK.education), Prof. Dr. Eva Stadler (Stuttgart Media University), Prof. Dr. Johannes Moser (LMU Munich) and historian Dr. Sascha Priest honored. The competition jury also includes Prof. Dr. Wolfgang M. Heckl (Deutsches Museum Munich), Niko Lamprecht (Association of History Teachers in Germany), Joachim Telgenbüscher (PM History) and Helmut Markwort (Focus). “‘The Secret of Life’ builds on the density anomaly of water. The students of the Humboldt-Gymnasium in Trier succeed in making a surprising start. Underlaid with music of the spheres, the viewer is electrified for the topic. To explain the phenomena, the film uses the the most varied stylistic devices and a talented main actor, the tardigrade. In the end, there are no doubts regarding the mysterious power and power of water,” says Helmut Markwort regarding the winning entry. Patron Emilia Flint adds: “The animations, the pictures, the editing, the music – everything is very high quality and appealing. A lot of exciting facts, I’ve learned a lot of new things myself!”

With the topic of the HISTORY AWARD 2023, the HISTORY Channel focused on the social importance of water. We were looking for film projects on the resource of water in the past, present and future. The central goal of the HISTORY AWARD is the recognition of active and creative engagement with a historical and social topic in the form of a video. Co-patron Ralph Caspers underlined the particular importance of this year’s motto: “The HISTORY AWARD is dedicated to a topic that is important to all of us: water. Water is fascinating because it can be vital and life-threatening at the same time. Dealing with what Water means to all of us is more important now than ever.”

The top 3 of the HISTORY-AWARD 2023 were not only the Trier high school students, but also teams from the 9th grade of the Peace School in Münster (film contribution “Water Society”, 2nd place) and the 4th grade of the Nördlingen-Mitte primary school (“Alarm in the Oceans” , Place 3). “A gripping fictional format with a conciliatory message. Although the story is ‘only’ told in drawings, the struggle for water and justice described develops a remarkable pull that you can’t resist,” says jury member Joachim Telgenbüscher (PM History ) regarding the second-placed project from Münster. Co-patron Ralph Caspers also paid tribute to the third-placed film by the students from Nördlingen: “I really liked the animation of the contribution from Nördlingen. It’s not that easy to keep calm and keep an overview with stop motion. The filmmakers did a great job of that. The interaction with the music also creates a very dense atmosphere. But not only the style, but also the content appeals to me. I think it’s particularly good that not only the problems are shown, but that tips are also given on how to make the world a little bit better.”

Kathrin Palesch, Managing Director of A+E Networks Germany, thanked all participants in the HISTORY AWARD 2023 at the event in Munich, to which numerous schoolchildren from all over Germany had traveled, and acknowledged their commitment: “With what dedication and The professionalism you approach the task is great and sets a great example. The range of topics is enormous, and your wealth of ideas and your creativity, dear participants, is inspiring and impressed us all. Thank you very much for that!”

The winners of the video competition organized by the HISTORY Channel were determined by the votes of the expert jury and the patron duo Ralph Caspers and Emilia Flint as well as by online voting. The Trier students received the HISTORY AWARD in Munich in the form of the station logo. In addition, the first three places were endowed with prize money donated by Vodafone.
