Invited on the show “Les Punchers” on RTL this Sunday, the date of Car-Free Day, Ecolo co-president Rajae Maouane indicated that she had gone to the set by taxi. “I’m not going to lie to you, I came by taxi. From my house to here, it was a 45-minute bike ride. It was a bit complicated,” she explains.

On social networks, some Internet users had a blast. Brussels MP Marc-Jean Ghyssels (PS) wrote this on X, formerly Twitter: “Take the car on car-free day to talk regarding ecology”, accompanied by a hashtag “double standards”.

Rajae Maouane, however, also received support from Abdel Sabbani, the president of the Brussels taxi federation. “All our support to Mrs. Rajae Maouane who sets an example and uses Brussels taxis, the latter represent a credible alternative to the personal car which is authorized on Sunday without a car,” he says.

Rajae Maouane defends herself: “Stressed by the stakes and the idea of arriving late”

Faced with the controversy, the co-president of Ecolo defended herself: “To get to the RTL set, I opted for public transport: the taxi. Quite stressed by the stakes and by the idea of arriving late for the punchers, I took a taxi and took responsibility for it,” she explains. “But don’t panic, I enjoyed Brussels without cars followingwards,” she assures.
