The Korean Society of Heart Failure announced the results of a survey on ‘Heart Failure Awareness’ at an international conference held at the Grand Intercontinental Seoul Parnas in Samseong-dong, Seoul on the 22nd.

[현대건강신문=박현진 기자] The disease with the highest mortality rate within 5 years following diagnosis is heart failure. Heart failure is a disease that occurs when the heart, which is supposed to supply blood to our body, does not function properly. If acute heart failure occurs, death can occur within hours or days.

Diseases that cause heart failure include coronary artery disease, hypertension, atrial fibrillation, heart valve disease, and cardiomyopathy.

Drugs or implantable devices are used to treat heart failure, and these devices cost 10 to 30 million won, and heart transplants cost hundreds of millions of won, putting a huge burden on patients with medical expenses.

The Korean Heart Failure Society (hereinfollowing referred to as the Heart Failure Society) announced the results of a survey on ‘Heart Failure Awareness’ at an international conference held at the Grand Intercontinental Seoul Parnas in Samseong-dong, Seoul on the 22nd.

Professor Lee Soo-young of the Department of Cardiology at Pusan National University Hospital, who presented at the event, said, “With the recent development of acute treatment technology for cardiac infarction, etc., if these patients survive, they will be left with some degree of heart failure, and most of these patients fall into the category of heart failure patients.” “The five-year survival rate for patients diagnosed with is 55%, which is lower than that of some cancers,” he warned.

According to a survey by the Heart Failure Association, the 5-year survival rate is 100% for thyroid cancer, 93.3% for breast cancer, 94.1% for prostate cancer, 76.5% for stomach cancer, 71.8% for colon cancer, 55% for heart failure, 30.2% for lung cancer, and 12.2% for pancreatic cancer.

Professor Lee said that awareness of heart failure is low, saying, “Even though the 5-year survival rate is low, when patients are diagnosed with heart failure, many people ask ‘What is it?’”

When patients with heart failure are hospitalized, the mortality rate is higher.

According to data surveying the ‘prevalence of acute heart failure in Korea’, the types of acute heart failure include 58.4% heart failure with reduced ejection fraction, 16.4% heart failure with mildly reduced ejection fraction, and 25.2% heart failure with preserved ejection fraction.

Professor Lee said, “If a heart failure patient is hospitalized, the 10-year survival rate is only 45%, and the risk is higher for heart failure with a reduced ejection fraction in the early stages.” He added, “Medical expenses are high during hospitalization, and in the United States, the proportion of heart failure patients among all patients is 45%. “It is regarding 2%, but medical costs account for 15%,” he said.

Kang Seok-min, president of the Heart Failure Society (professor of cardiology at Severance Hospital), said, “Heart failure is one of the diseases that requires repeated hospitalization and discharge and the highest medical expenses, and is a disease that will increase most rapidly in Korea, which is entering a super-aging society.”

According to the recently released Heart Failure Factsheet 2022, the cost of hospitalization for heart failure patients averaged 8.5 million won per person as of 2020, and the medical expenses for heart failure patients amounted to 3.2 trillion won.

The average annual heart failure-related costs for individual patients were 11 million won for patients visiting the emergency room, 8.53 million won for hospitalized patients, 5.42 million won for patients with chronic kidney disease, and 3.69 million won for patients with diabetes.

It was also pointed out that the government’s preparation for heart failure, which is expected to result in high medical expenses due to the aging population, is insufficient.

At a debate on heart failure held at the National Assembly in 2017, Director Kang Min-gyu of the Ministry of Health and Welfare promised, “We will include heart failure through enforcement rules in the Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Disease Enforcement Act,” and the definition and management of heart failure is the cornerstone of the enforcement regulations of the Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Disease Act. prepared.

Professor Soo-young Lee said, “Heart failure is included in the enforcement rules, but there is no information on whether the country will systematically manage heart failure.” He added, “It is urgent to first establish quality management indicators for heart failure patients.”
