This information and awareness campaign aimed to reduce the number of deaths caused by detecting them earlier, before symptoms appear. The awareness session led by Doctor Eliane Ndounga brought together several women who wore the pink ribbon, symbol of this event, on their t-shirts.
“We are aware of the importance of information in the fight once morest breast cancer. We organize this type of event to contribute to this noble cause. It should be noted that for breast cancer the mortality rate has reached 80% in Congo. Detected early, breast cancer is curable in more than 90% of cases. said Diana Attye, director of the Burotop Iris Foundation.
On the subject of breast cancer, the doctor widely explained the risk factors, causes, consequences, ways to avoid it, treatments, the importance of early detection, symptoms and provided advice to the participants.
Indeed, breast cancer is a malignant tumor that develops in the mammary gland. It is the most common cancer in women. Cancer cells can spread to nearby breast tissue, causing tumors that form lumps or thickening. Invasive cancers can spread to surrounding lymph nodes or other organs (by forming metastases). Metastases can be fatal.
The symptoms of breast cancer are, among others, a hard mass in a breast, fixed or mobile, often with irregular contours, swollen and hard non-painful lymph nodes in the armpit, spontaneous discharge from one of the two nipples, a change in one nipple or in the appearance of the skin of the breast.
In 2020 in Congo and according to the cancer registry, 444 new cases of breast cancer were detected. 198 affected women died. “The treatment is expensive, a course of at least 300,000 CFA francs following three weeks is recommended for affected women. Regularly seeing a healthcare professional and getting tested can save your life”indicated Doctor Eliane Ndounga.
She also suggested to women a mammogram in possible association with a breast ultrasound, carried out annually and followed by earlier radiology, with possible breast MRI, often discussed on a case by case basis.
At the end of the awareness session, Issa Attye, general manager of Burotop Iris who closed this work, was delighted with the interaction of the exchanges, the nature of the debate without taboos. He encouraged the Foundation to continue, once a year in October, with this women’s information initiative.
