Raising Awareness: Breast Cancer and Prostate Cancer Screening for a Healthier Future

We often talk regarding Pink October to raise awareness regarding breast cancer and for good reason, 160 new cases are detected each year. But among men, 2 new cases of prostate cancer are recorded every week! Photo exhibitions, general public conferences, several meetings are organized this month to encourage screening, the only way to prevent the disease.

Dancing and feeling freedom as breast cancer tries to take her away. This is the adventure experienced by Taina Calissi in 2020. Today 8 young talents from André Tshan pay tribute to her with a choreography inspired by this artist and warrior. “What appears in the photos is in reality the choreography that I did during my chemotherapy treatment. Because I did not have the physical capacity to run, to do sports that were a bit physical. And so I started to do slow movements that still allowed me to maintain physical activity. It’s a way for me to continue to fight, to move forward and today I am cured.” says Taina Calissi.

To hope for a cure, you have to go through the examination box. But the fear of the “cancer” diagnosis holds back more than one person. In Polynesia, only 40% of women are screened. “Being screened means having the chance to have less onerous treatment, it means having the chance to increase your chances of survival. This is what we must keep in mind, it increases the chances of survival, it is very important. And indeed, not getting tested, in a way, is condemning yourself.”specifies Tamara Drape-Pommier, vice-president of the Amazones Pacific association.

At Pirae town hall this morning, focus on prostate cancer. The 3rd deadliest cancer in men. We came here because we heard that there was a conference on the prostate, so we said to ourselves it would be better to go and listen to the doctor. It’s not a simple person, it’s the doctor who explains. And if we have things to ask, well we’ll ask them. And like that we have a lot more explanations, information, that’s it.”says Raymond Huang, 64, “pBecause I’m also sick of that, so I know, so I just came to look for details. That’s all. [Quel genre de précisions vous avez pu avoir ?] Are there new technologies to treat cancer…”

A conference hosted by 4 specialists, urologists and sexologists from France. They explain that these new treatments might cure one in two cancers today. Why are we talking regarding the prostate, even though we are in the situation of Pink October? Because there are families who have a parallel, have both prostate cancer, and both breast cancer, and both ovarian cancer. And so it is linked to a genetic mutation and for these families, we must be more careful, we must start screening at age 45.”underlines Doctor Richard Mallet, urologist at the Francheville hospital in Périgueux.

And the first step in screening is self-examination. So dare to find out from your doctor or cancer associations. Because these actions can save lives.
