Raising Awareness About Cervical Cancer Screening for Congolese Women – World Health Organization

On the sidelines of the month of January dedicated to awareness of cervical cancer, the World Health Organization communicated on Wednesday January 10 on awareness, the importance and the interest for Congolese women to get screened for cervical cancer, emphasizing that screening, early diagnosis as well as rapid and effective treatment are essential for this form of cancer.

“Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable and treatable forms of cancer if detected early. Regular screening is crucial to detect changes in the cervix that might, if left untreated, develop into cancer. Awareness, importance and interest for Congolese women in being screened for cervical cancer remain essential,” the press release specifies.

In another announcement published by the same organization earlier this year, the main symptoms of cervical cancer cited were irregular bleeding (even following menopause), increased vaginal discharge, pain during intercourse sexual intercourse and vaginal bleeding during sexual intercourse.

Cervical cancer develops on a woman’s cervix (the part that connects the vagina to the uterine cavity). Almost all cases of cervical cancer are linked to infection with high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV), an extremely common virus transmitted through sexual contact. Although most HPV infections resolve spontaneously and cause no symptoms, persistent infection can cause cervical cancer in women.
