Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi met Vladimir Putin on Wednesday January 19 in Moscow. On the menu for discussion: negotiations on Iranian nuclear power, Syria, Afghanistan or even Nagorno-Karabakh, but also the strengthening of economic ties between their countries, dissects the Iranian press.
“Invited by his Russian counterpart, Mr. Raisi has just arrived in Moscow to discuss the expansion of trade economic, political and cultural, said the website of the Iranian presidency on Wednesday at noon. This is the first visit by an Iranian president to Russia since 2017. Since coming to power in August, the ultra-conservative Iranian president has pursued a foreign policy geared towards the East (China and Russia).
In Tehran, government media reported on a mainly economic visit, with little relation to ongoing talks in Vienna, where the horizon for reviving the nuclear deal seemed to darken in recent days.
“Some analysts are trying to reduce the meeting to a political trip linked to the Vienna talks”, noted the pro-government daily Iran, while praising the “coordination constructive” between the two countries on this matter. “The deepening of relations in various fields, especially the issue of trade and economy, will be negotiated during this trip”, added the newspaper.
Resumed at the end of November in the Austrian capital, the talks between Iran and the international community, including Russia, aim to bring the United States back into the historic pact concluded in 2015, which left it in 2018, and to bring back Tehran to respect its commitments, broken in reaction to the reinstatement of American sanctions.
Negotiations have stalled since their launch, prompting Washington to recently warn of failure if a deal is not reached by “a few weeks”.
