Rains Live| Mullaperiyar: Ten shutters raised, 1870 cubic feet of water gushing out: Alert on Periyar coast

Kerala Rain Updates: Mullaperiyar Dam opened. Ten spillway shutters were raised. The shutters of V1, V5, V6 and V10 were raised at 5 pm. 1870 cubic feet of water is flowing into Periyar through ten shutters. The shutters at Mullaperiyar Dam were opened in three phases from noon. Idukki Dam will be reached via Vallakadav, Vandiperiyar, Chappath, Upputhara and Ayyappankovil. An alert has been issued along the Periyar coast. People have been advised not to land in Periyar.

Malampuzha Dam was opened at three o’clock. 4 shutters are opened 5 cm each due to possibility of rain in rainy area. A blue alert has been declared in Wayanad Banasura Sagar Reservoir as the water level has reached 772.50 meters due to continued rain in the catchment area. The current upper rule level of water conservation is 774 meters. A blue alert is an early warning as part of the initial steps to release excess water from the dam.

At the same time, there is some relief from the heavy rains that have been going on in the state for the last four days. There is no red alert in any district today. It has been raining in many places since morning. Heavy rain likely to occur in northern districts today and isolated heavy rain from Pathanamthitta district to north. Orange alert has been issued in eight districts and yellow alert in four districts due to possibility of isolated heavy rain.

Rain may decrease from tomorrow. However, rains are likely to continue in Kerala-Tamil Nadu Western Ghats till Sunday.
Expert opinion is that more caution should be exercised in hilly areas and dam areas. Low pressure is expected to form in the Bay of Bengal on Sunday
