Rainfall Deficit and Farming Challenges in Sarthe: The Impact on Water Tables and Plant Diseases

In recent days in Sarthe, we have been used to rain and spring temperatures, rather than a big blue sky and a beautiful sun. However, the showers do not fill the water tables. “We are even in rainfall deficite”, specifies Didier Grossin, forecaster at Météo France Pays de la Loire. “In the department of Sarthe, the precipitation we currently have is not very effective. They’re just a bit of a hassle for farming insofar as they will bring humidity to the plants and this will be conducive to the development of diseases such as fungi. We don’t even talk regarding groundwater. Anyway, it is not in summer that we recharge the water tablesdespite thunderstorms or showers.”

“A comfortable climate”

However, we must not see only the bad side of the coin, relativizes Didier Grossin. The rainy and humid weather even prevents the outbreak of fires in the forest from being accentuated. “There are three factors that trigger forest fires: wind above 30 km/h, humidity below 30% and temperatures above 30 degrees. Currently, we don’t have these weather conditions at all, so it’s rather favorable for the fire not starting. It also helps to avoid extreme heat.. Currently, we have a very comfortable climate and not at all what they have in the South of France. We have temperatures that are neither cool nor excessive. This month of July is a breath in the global warming.
