Rainfall below normal is expected and contingency measures for supply are urged to be prepared

Asunción, IP Agency.- The drought situation that currently affects the country’s water resources will be exacerbated by forecasts of below-normal rainfall for the coming weeks. They warn of the situation to develop contingency plans.

The director of Water Resources of the Ministry of the Environment (Mades), David Fariña, indicated that recommendations were issued to water supply companies to take the necessary contingency measures.

Long-term forecasts indicate that there will be below-normal rainfall given the La Niña phenomenon, he explained in an interview with Paraguay TV.

He pointed out that 80% of the population of Paraguay is supplied with groundwater provided by institutions, companies and sanitation boards, we may have problems because the aquifers and groundwater are not being recharged, he indicated.

These are effects of the drought that has been going on since 2020, he noted. More rain is expected for the first quarter of 2025, however, most aquifers have a reaction time for recharge of between 8 to 10 months at the time of the rains.

The current drought is strongly affected by the Paraguay River, which in recent days has been breaking the downspout record in 120 years of measurement. This Wednesday woke up with -1.30 meters.

“We urge all socioeconomic sectors to prepare for unfavorable or inadequate situations that we can for the supplies of our communities and for our economic development, that we prepare for any eventuality,” he indicated.

The current downspout was alerted in the first quarter of this year by Mades authorities, pointing out the decline below historical figures of the water sources that feed the Paraguay River in the state of Matto Grosso.
