“Rainbow Pedestrian Crossings: Controversy and Inclusivity in Brussels”

Good atmosphere eight days before Pride… Brussels Mobility recently painted four pedestrian crossings in the colors of the rainbow in support of the LGBTQIA + community on the occasion of the Belgian Pirde on 20 May. Located on the avenue de Tervueren at the level of Montgomery, this development which aims to promote inclusiveness, however, displeases the mayor of Woluwe-Saint-Pierre Benoit Cerexhe (Les Engagés).

The latter had already explained last February that he did not want a rainbow pedestrian crossing in his town. Confirming his support for the LGBTQIA + community, he questioned the relevance of this practice: “I wonder regarding this mix of genres. A pedestrian crossing has a very clear function: to secure the crossing of pedestrians. Should they be used to support other causes? Let’s say we’re doing rainbow crossings today. What if tomorrow we are challenged for other causes?”

He reiterates his position today with our colleagues from Sudinfo: “It is unacceptable that, through the management of regional roads, we impose things that a mayor has refused.” And “scandal” so for the mayor, who regrets not having been consulted by the Region.

No rainbow pedestrian crossing in Woluwe-Saint-Pierre: “just because others have done it doesn’t mean we have to do it automatically”

The minister responsible for Brussels Mobility, Elke Van Den Brandt (Ecolo), named by the mayor, defends the initiative in a tweet: “I will not compromise on inclusion in our city. Everyone is welcome, everyone can be themselves. Every year we paint a number of crosswalks in rainbow colours. We do this every year, in honor of Pride. And we will continue to do so.”
