Rain, rain and more rain in southern Norway

Rain, rain and more rain in southern Norway

– It might be good to have the umbrella ready. It can probably feel a bit autumnal, when it comes to wind, precipitation and gray weather, says state meteorologist Anne Solveig Andersen to NTB.

We are over halfway through the last summer month of the year. But it’s an umbrella and rain jacket that apply now, rather than sunscreen and swimming trunks. At least in southern Norway.

Autumn is fast approaching – and this week will feel like a little foretaste.

The torrential rain that hit parts of Eastern Norway on Wednesday will move north and hit Nordland and Troms on Thursday, albeit with far less rainfall.

Remnants of tropical hurricane

And that will actually be a bit of déjà vu every day this week. This pattern repeats itself every day in the future. A new precipitation field hits large parts of southern Norway, moves north while it decreases in strength – before it all repeats itself the next day for several days ahead.

It is about the remnants of tropical hurricane Ernesto, which hit Bermuda a few days ago, according to Andersen.

– The remnants from Ernesto mix with another low pressure and will affect southern Norway, says Andersen.

– So there will be new rounds with rain and wet. There are currently no new danger warnings, but we are of course following developments, says Andersen.

Better in the north

While the whole week will remain fairly wet in southern Norway, parts of northern Norway will have far greater chances of good weather in between, she explains.

There is currently a high risk of forest fires in the far north of Finnmark, and this will continue in the future.

– In northern Norway, it could be over 20 degrees in several places over the next few days, while in the south the temperatures could reach up to 20 degrees, she says.

Drier next week

Only on Sunday can you count on somewhat better weather in Eastern Norway, according to Andersen.

– Then it is the case that we are talking about periods of rain, it is not the case that it will rain 24 hours a day, all the time – fortunately. But as the situation looks now, it’s probably a good idea to enjoy the periods when the weather is a little lighter, because they won’t be that long in southern Norway.

The preliminary forecasts show that less rain is expected in the south next week.
