Rain of rockets: Interim Hezbollah leader announces greater pressure

BEIRUT (AP) — Hezbollah launched another barrage of rockets toward Israel Tuesday, and the interim leader of the political-paramilitary group vowed to increase the pressure that has forced tens of thousands of Israelis to flee their homes near the Lebanese border. .

The Israeli military said it sent more ground troops to southern Israel, and that a senior Hezbollah commander was killed in an airstrike.

Dozens of rockets fired by Hezbollah were aimed as far away as Haifa, and the Israeli government warned residents north of the coastal city to limit their activities and ordered more schools to close. Israel’s military said Hezbollah launched 170 rockets across the border.

Sheikh Naim Kassem, Hezbollah’s interim leader, noted that the group’s capabilities remain intact after weeks of intense Israeli airstrikes on large areas of Lebanon, and operations in which senior commanders have been killed in a matter of days. He said Israeli forces have been unable to advance since they began a ground incursion into Lebanon last week.

In a video recorded at an undisclosed location, Kasem also said Hezbollah will appoint a new leader to succeed Hassan Nasrallah, “but the circumstances are difficult because of the war.”

In a statement to the people of Lebanon, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Hezbollah is “weaker than it has been in many, many years.” He added that “We eliminated thousands of terrorists, including Nasrallah himself, and Nasrallah’s replacement and his replacement’s replacement” without giving their names.

Nasrallah was killed last month in an Israeli airstrike on a bunker in Beirut. Hashem Safieddine, Nasrallah’s cousin who oversees the group’s political affairs, was generally considered his heir apparent. However, no announcements have been made about a successor, and Safieddine has not appeared in public or made any statements since Nasrallah’s death.

Israel claims it has dismantled insurgent infrastructure on the border and killed hundreds of Hezbollah fighters. The army said yesterday it had neutralized Suhail Husseini, whom it described as a senior commander responsible for logistical supervision, budgets and management of the group.

Hezbollah had no immediate comment and there is no way to independently verify the claims from both sides.

The Israeli military said it deployed a fourth division in southern Lebanon and that operations have expanded westward, but their target appears to remain a narrow strip along the border.

A day into the one-year anniversary of the war in Gaza, Israeli forces fought intense battles yesterday against Palestinian militants in the north, where residents were ordered to evacuate.

Hezbollah’s interim leader noted that the group supports Lebanese parliament leader Nabih Berri’s efforts to achieve a ceasefire, but did not specify whether that means the group would be willing to accept a truce before a ceasefire occurs. to the fire in Gaza. Berri, a close ally of Hezbollah, has been seen as the main interlocutor between the militant group and the United States, and has tried to negotiate a ceasefire.
