Tired of suffering from the constant flooding in their streets and homes, residents of various human settlements raised their voices in protest and blocked the Pan-American highway. The measure coincides with the visit of President Dina Boluarte to Piura, from whom concrete announcements are expected in the midst of the climate emergency that is plaguing this region.
On the Piura-Catacaos highway, residents of the Monteverde Urbanization clashed with some drivers who were restricted from passing for a few hours. In this residential area, stormwater completely flooded the entrances to the houses. The protesters accuse land invaders of covering the drain where the rainwater must have flowed.
Meanwhile, residents of the La Primavera settlement in Castilla once once more blocked the bridge and the highway. In addition, they burned tires to demand the cleaning of Drain 1308.
The day before, the residents of the 31 de Enero human settlement took over a section of Gullman Avenue. There they placed tires and blocked traffic to demand help from the mayor of the Twenty-sixth of October district, Víctor Hugo Febre. They mainly need to evacuate the rainwater and wastewater that have entered their homes. A similar panorama was observed in the Coscomba sector.
President in Piura
The protests coincide with the visit of President Dina Boluarte, who arrived in this city to supervise the government’s response capacity in the face of the emergency. Upon her arrival, she held an informative meeting with the head of the presidency of the Council of Ministers, the heads of the Ministry of Defense, Agriculture and Housing, as well as the head of Indeci and the regional governor of Piura, Luis Neyra.
According to his schedule, in the next few hours he will go to some critical points and give a press conference. The population remains annoyed by the lack of specificity of the announcements.
