Three European Championship titles for the girls, three medals for Lukas Dotzer

Brežice (Terme Čatež), Slowenien (OTS) Austria’s national youth team won four gold, four silver and one bronze medal at the European Championships in blitz and rapid chess, the speed disciplines of chess, in the U-14 to U18 age groups.

At the start, Lukas Dotzer and Michael Wimmer won silver and bronze in the U-14 individually and in the team ranking together with Peter Balint and Robert Ernst, another silver medal behind Poland. Laurenz Borrmann takes second place in the U-16. In the U18 team ranking, Katharina Katter and Emilia Deak-Sala were able to overtake the previously leading Slovenians in the girls’ final round and win their first gold medal ahead of Ukraine and Estonia.

Once they get a taste for it, Katter and Deak-Sala follow up with blitz chess. Both achieved a fantastic finale in the 18 rounds with seven and seven and a half points respectively from eight games. That’s two more gold medals for the girls. The run continues for the boys too. Lukas Dotzer comes through from the U14 armada and wins his third medal with gold. In the U-18, Marc Morgunov underlined the strong performance of national youth coach Georg Fröwis’ team with a silver medal.

“What a day for Austrian chess – congratulations to all the young people, the coaching team and a special thank you to the parents who have supported their children’s chess from an early age! You have achieved outstanding successes together!

Our most successful European Championship of all time is also a confirmation of the ÖSB youth promotion and our “Super Talents” program in which we want to introduce our young people to the absolute top of the world with intensive training, for example with the international top trainer Grandmaster Artur Jussupow,” says ÖSB President Stöttinger happily the top performances.
