The National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (INAMEH) reported that rain is forecast in several states of the country during the morning and afternoon of Saturday, August 24.
Variable intensity rainfall with possible electrical discharges is forecast for the afternoon in the Capital District and in the states of Miranda, Amazonas, Bolívar, Delta Amacuro, Monagas, Anzoátegui, Sucre, La Guaira, Aragua, Carabobo, Apure, Barinas, Falcón, Lara, and Zulia.
Meteorologist Luis Vargas explained in his X account that the rainfall is due to activity in the intertropical convergence zone, affected by a monsoon trough recorded east of Venezuela.
“Furthermore, this is reinforced by the divergence of high altitude winds, which is producing moderate to heavy rainfall in a large part of the country,” the expert added.
Monsoon trough
According to the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC), the monsoon trough is a large area of low pressure located along the Intertropical Convergence Zone. This meteorological feature increases precipitation over continental lands.
Vargas clarified that the rains with electrical discharges and gusts of wind will be more noticeable in the regions of northeastern Guayana, central plains, north center and the Andes, as well as in the state of Zulia.
Rain in Venezuela
The rainy season continues in Venezuela, driven in part by the passage of tropical waves through the national territory and the Caribbean Sea.
Over the past few months, five named tropical storms have formed in the Atlantic in the context of the hurricane season. Although none of them have had direct effects on Venezuela, their passage through the Caribbean has caused rain in the country.
Among the most recent effects of the rains are: Overflow of two streams in the municipality of Morán in the state of Lara, which occurred on August 18. The event caused the collapse of a bridge, as well as structural damage to two homes. However, no injuries were reported.
Previously, one person died and several homes were affected due to a landslide and overflowing streams, following heavy rains recorded between August 16 and 17 in the Sucre municipality of Portuguesa state.
Also, on August 12, rains with strong gusts of wind caused flooding and the fall of several trees in different areas of the Caracas Metropolitan Area. The team of The Diary The police confirmed that the back wall of the José de San Martín Technical Industrial School, located on Morán Avenue, collapsed due to the rain. According to residents of the area, the wall had been in poor condition for several months.
