It rains, often, and that takes a toll on our morale. But this rain can also be seen as good news, if we want to see it positively. Indeed, according to the Compagnie des Eaux de Liège, the Walloon water tables are filling up, and not just a little. The situation would even be positive everywhere in the country.
With the current weather conditions, these galleries, where the water catchments are carried out, are filling up with rainwater. The latter, filtered by the ground, is stored in natural underground passages, as in Néblon-le-Moulin. This water table covers 66 square kilometers and supplies, with a network of other sites, 24 municipalities in the Province of Liège. In the small corridors of the site, we discover a large volume of water, which delights the experts.
Every day, 30,000 cubic meters of water are pumped there. Water of rare purity, which is then checked to avoid the slightest problem before consumption, the whole being finally delivered to the distribution network. The good news is that lately the water level has been rising there. “In March, there were heavy and well-distributed, very regular rains”, confirms Jean-Michel Compère, Catchment Manager at the Compagnie des Eaux de Liège.
And that’s great news! “The levels have risen well, we are at an average level which allows us to spend the summer without too much worry”, he tells us. This should avoid problems comparable to those experienced in France, with significant restrictions in certain regions. The real question will be whether, with climate change, the rain will be as present as it is now. Rain, which remains the one and only raw material for our water consumption.
