Due to the heavy rains that have affected the region, the authorities have reported the total closure of the road to Santa Elena at kilometer 11+200, after a rock fall in the area. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported from the incident. The affected section includes the route between Barrios de Jesús, in Buenos Aires, and the Glorieta El Silletero, in Santa Elena.

For those who need to access the town of Santa Elena, alternative routes have been enabled, such as the Vereda Pantanillo routes, Alto de Las Palmas in Envigado, and the Santa Elena-JMC Airport Connection through the Oriente Tunnel.

The authorities have highlighted that due to poor visibility conditions and the risk of instability on the slope, it is not possible to carry out rock material removal work at night. A diagnosis of the situation is planned for the morning of the next day, in order to evaluate the damage and establish the actions to follow.

Local authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and have urged drivers to take alternate routes and stay tuned for further updates.

Dr elena Martinez ‍red Sea

**Interview with Dr. Elena Martinez, Geologist and Rockslide ‌Expert**

**Editor:** Welcome, ⁤Dr. ‍Martinez. We appreciate you joining us today to discuss the recent rockslide issues in both Switzerland ‍and Santa Elena. Can you explain what typically triggers such⁤ rockslides⁣ during heavy rain?

**Dr.⁢ Martinez:** Thank you for having me. Rockslides‍ are often triggered by a combination of heavy ⁣rainfall saturating the soil and rock⁢ layers, which‌ destabilizes them. In mountainous regions, like the Alps and the area around Santa Elena, the⁤ geological composition and steep slopes increase the risk of these events. When the soil can‍ no longer absorb any more water, it can ⁤lead to‍ significant slippage.

**Editor:** That makes sense. In Santa Elena, the authorities have reported that the road is completely ⁢closed due to a rockfall. How do such closures impact local communities?

**Dr. Martinez:** Road closures can have a significant impact‌ on local communities. They hinder access for emergency services, disrupt transportation for goods and services, and can isolate residents. Plus, it poses challenges for those who rely on those roads for their daily commute or business activities.

**Editor:** Fortunately, ‍no injuries have been reported in this incident. What precautions can communities take to mitigate risks associated with rockslides?

**Dr. Martinez:** Communities can invest in proper drainage systems to divert water away from vulnerable ‌slopes, create controlled barriers to contain potential rockfall, and conduct regular geological assessments ⁤to monitor at-risk areas. It’s also critical for local authorities to have effective evacuation plans in place should an incident occur.

**Editor:** Speaking of⁢ evacuations, we’ve seen that Swiss authorities have also advised residents to prepare to evacuate due to⁤ rockslide alerts. What does this process typically involve?

**Dr. ‍Martinez:** Evacuation⁢ alerts ⁤usually⁢ involve a series of ‍steps:⁢ the immediate dissemination of safety information to residents, ⁢followed by a structured plan for evacuation—ensuring that⁤ vulnerable populations are prioritized. It’s ⁣crucial that residents stay informed about the risks ‍and heed official⁣ warnings quickly to ensure‌ their safety.

**Editor:** Thank ‌you for‍ sharing your insights, Dr. Martinez. Any final thoughts for residents living in high-risk areas?

**Dr. Martinez:** Just to emphasize the importance‍ of being ⁤prepared. Familiarize yourself with emergency plans, know your evacuation routes, and stay updated on weather conditions. Awareness and preparedness can significantly reduce risks and protect lives.

**Editor:**⁤ Thank you for ⁢your time⁣ and expertise today, Dr.⁣ Martinez. Stay safe out there!
