22-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal is set to retire in 2024.
“I won’t be able to play at Roland Garros. As you know, I have been working very hard every day for the past few months, but I have not been able to find a solution to the problem that has arisen in Australia. Today I do not feel ready to show the standard of tennis that I need at Roland Garros.
Second. The last few years have been very good in terms of results – I managed to win a couple of Grand Slams, several important tournaments. But I didn’t enjoy my work.
After the pandemic, the body might not cope with the daily work, so I did not enjoy training and tournaments. Too often I had to take breaks due to physical problems, too often I trained through pain. So I need to take a break.
I don’t know when I can get back on the court. Maybe I’ll take a break for a month and a half, maybe two, maybe four. I will follow my feelings and try to do what will benefit my body and bring me happiness.
My goal and desire is to stop in order to enjoy the next season, which will probably be my last on the professional tour. I can’t guarantee 100 percent that this will work out. But the intention is this.
I want to say goodbye to all the tournaments that were important to me and to my career. I want to fight and enjoy this moment. Now this is impossible.
But I believe that if I take a break now, then next year I will have such an opportunity, ”Nadal said at a press conference.
