Spanish veteran Rafael Nadal announced yesterday that he will not participate in the Australian Open tennis tournament, the first of the four major tournaments, as a result of suffering a muscle tear a week following his return to the court following being absent for a year due to injury as well. Nadal (37 years old), who has won 22 major titles, wrote on the “X” website (formerly Twitter) two days following his loss in the quarter-finals of the Brisbane tournament in Australia: “At the present time, I am not ready to compete at the highest level in five-set matches. “I will go back to Spain to see my doctor and get some treatment and rest.”
Nadal began his comeback by participating in Brisbane, one of the 250 points tournaments for professionals, but his adventure ended in the quarter-finals once morest Australian Jordan Thompson 7-5, 6-7 (8/6), 3-6 last Friday.
