The first day of the 40th Vienna Danube Island Festival ended on Friday with a brilliant concert by RAF Camora. After an extremely poor start in terms of weather, which ensured a manageable number of visitors, the rap superstar finally attracted the masses. In his luggage he had a new album called “XV” and several guests like Yung Hurn. Before that, Paula Hartmann convinced with a mix of pop and hip hop, while Greeen relied on relaxed, positive rap sounds.

Countless cell phones shot up at the start of RAF Camora’s hour-and-a-half concert. The space in front of the festival stage curated by FM4 on Friday was filled to the very back. Some of the on average quite young spectators got a better view on various wagons and toilet blocks. The crowd was not only rewarded for coming with a break in the rain, RAF Camora also performed numerous songs from his album “XV”, which was released today.

For the song “Wien” he brought Yung Hurn, who was very familiar to the audience, onto the stage to shoot a video. “Makes us proud,” he said, urging the audience to twirl whatever can be twirled. Said and done. Even with the often-uttered request “All hands up”, the crowd was not stingy.

The rapper from Vienna-Fünfhaus didn’t just heat up the audience with his mix of dancehall, hip-hop and pop. Two flamethrowers and Bengals were also used, while the light show fired from all tubes and the bass boomed properly from the loudspeakers.

RAF Camora performed at the Donauinselfest regarding 20 years ago. Back then, however, there were fewer people in front of the stage than on it, he recalled. The fact that he is now performing on the festival stage is the “greatest satisfaction of my life”, according to the musician.

The German rapper Greeen prepared the ground for RAF Camora with a green cap and green shirt. He relied on a healthy dose of good humor and positivity. “I make music because it makes you happy,” he rapped at one point, and he’s obviously right. Because the audience, which has already appeared in large numbers, is happy to follow his requests to jump, bend their knees and wave their arms. And apart from the all in all relaxed (reggae) beats, despite the suboptimal weather, Greeen had no reason to be in a bad mood. Just think of the trees that are happy regarding the rain, he joked.

The visitors of the Danube Island Festival also bravely endured the inhospitable conditions at Paula Hartmann’s. The only 22-year-old German singer cannot yet fall back on many songs, but the ones presented were good. And the newcomer didn’t skimp on announcements to the audience either. Referring to the allegations once morest Rammstein singer Till Lindemann, she called for the victims to be believed and began her song “3 seconds”, which is regarding unwanted touching in clubs. The singer also spoke regarding mental health and encouraged everyone to do the same and get help if the worst came to the worst.

The Viennese musician Rahel opened the festival stage. But the singer-songwriter didn’t lure the masses to the stage with her dreamy synth sounds and pop refrains. Afterwards, with the Munich indie pop band Mola, one mightn’t complain regarding not having enough space to dance. “Singing isn’t regarding perfection, it’s regarding singing yourself freely,” singer Isabella Streifeneder encouraged the crowd to support her vocally. After thoughtful to melancholic sounds, the invitation was then invited to “the most beautiful Viennese indie moshpit”.

Away from the festival stage, the ORF III culture tent primarily attracted a younger audience with a K-Pop evening, while Jazz Gitti on the Schlager stage and Wir 4 on the Rock stage were also intended to appeal to the older generation. Various sporting stations were less frequented than the numerous food and drink stands, probably due to the weather. Some also used the canopies as a welcome opportunity to escape the stubborn rain, while others resorted to rain ponchos that were distributed.

Vienna’s Mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) and the new SPÖ boss Andreas Babler also defied the weather on a round on the working world island. There was a lot to shake hands and take selfies for the two. Babler has not been at the festival in recent years, but has been around 15 to 20 times since it was founded, as the new top Social Democrat asserted. He described such a festival in the middle of a metropolis as a “real privilege” and willingly climbed into a VW Beetle repaired by MA48 to pose for photos. Ludwig was there for the zero number and has come back once more and once more since then. He sees the “personal, solidary togetherness” on the island as a highlight. And he likes to think back to the legendary Falco concert. Ludwig described the fact that the Viennese SPÖ might afford such a major event in times of rising prices as “important”.

All in all, the festival organized by the Viennese SPÖ has a length of four and a half kilometers with 13 stages and 700 hours of programme. 800 police officers are on duty every day. 300 security forces are also to ensure that everything runs smoothly, and 250 paramedics and paramedics are also on duty. For the big highlight on the first day – the concert by RAF Camora – a security concept was specially created. Michael Patrick Kelly, Silbermond, The BossHoss, Bonnie Tyler and Royal Republic await visitors as highlights of the other two days of the festival.
