A life-threatening incident occurred late on Monday followingnoon in Radstadt: the barriers opened at a level crossing, a waiting bus pulled up – and then a train approached.
The accident occurred on Monday around 4:20 p.m. on a restricted level crossing on the Ennstalbahn near Tauernstrasse in Radstadt.
Due to the initially closed barrier system, the driver of the ÖBB bus had to bring his vehicle to a stop immediately in front of it. It took several minutes before the barrier booms opened once more, even though no rail vehicles had passed the level crossing in the meantime. The police reported this on Monday evening.
But at the moment when the driver wanted to cross the railway crossing with his bus, the man noticed a train coming from the right. He immediately put the car in reverse and accelerated. The train driver also became aware of the dangerous situation, but despite the immediate emergency braking, he was no longer able to avoid a collision with the bus. Both vehicles were significantly damaged as a result. However, no people were harmed. According to police, the bus was unoccupied at the time of the accident – apart from the driver.
Why did the incident happen? The police report states: “According to the current status of the investigation, human error may have been the cause of the early opening of the barrier system.”
