The state-owned Ukrainian nuclear energy company Energoatom warns that radioactive substances might leak from the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. the Power connection of the power plant was cut and therefore spent nuclear fuel cannot be cooled. Work to restore the connection and the power supply to the facility occupied by Russian soldiers is not possible because of the ongoing fighting, it said.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) had previously complained that the former nuclear power plant known for the 1986 disaster was increasingly cut off from the outside world. According to the agency, 210 technicians and local security personnel have been on duty for almost two weeks without a break because there was no shift change under Russian control.

The position of the technicians is deteriorating rapidly

Although they have water and food, their situation is getting worse and worse. In addition, the IAEA is no longer connected to its surveillance equipment, which ensures that all nuclear material is in place.

In Chernobyl was a devastating nuclear accident in 1986. Radioactive waste is still stored there today. So far are also another AKW in Saporischschja and some other facilities with stockpiles of nuclear material affected by the Russian invasion. However, no radioactive material escaped.
