In a complex context for the Argentine media landscape, This year Perfil opened its doors to Radio Horizonte, the classic station from the 80s that, following 20 years, returned with the best music and its unmatched style. Horizon can be heard in the FM 101.9 and through its new website, horizonte.perfil.com.
Radio Perfil, the news station, on September 4, returned one of the most missed products of Argentine radio to the dial. Horizonte was born on August 14, 1986 and, until 2001, it generated a before and following in Argentine radio by installing the concept of “trasnoche”, becoming the first station with programming 24 hours a day.
With the legendary phrase of Martín Wullich, “Meanwhile, here, in the big city, a new hour… begins!”and a musical criterion that became a guide with news from international artists for listeners, Horizonte established itself in the 80s as the most listened to FM in the country. She also pioneered summer broadcasts from the Atlantic Coast.
At its reopening, celebrated in August by prominent media entrepreneurs Jorge Fontevecchia and Fernando Marin, who created Radio Horizonte, might anticipate the excitement of providing a new episode for the beloved and long-awaited station. On that occasion, Fontevecchia thanked Marín for the launch of Horizonte and expressed. “If it had not been for him, no one would have believed. The success and sense of smell of this man, who shows that sense of smell is never lost. Here we have the best television and radio producer in Argentina, we are proud to have him“.
“That new media appear, that there are people who undertake, is always good news”Jorge Fontevecchia remarked at the celebration, surrounded by the creativity of renowned artists in the field, such as Eddie Sierra, Sergio “Chicho” Soldati and Martín Wullich. It was also a meeting of artistic minds and influential cultural figures, such as María Belén Ludueña, Iliana Calachó, Fabián Paz, Alberto Amato, Tomás Dente, Verónica de la Canal, Ana Rosenfeld, Francisco De Narváez, Liliana Parodi and Débora Plager.
Interview with the director of Radio Horizonte: “The public’s response has been formidable and even ineffable”
Sergio “Chicho” Soldatipartner of Perfil and director of Radio Horizonte, took a moment to reflect on the reopening of the FM, within the framework of the launch of the new website.
—Why do you think it was relevant for Perfil to open the doors to a project like Horizonte?
—I began to dream regarding the idea of returning from the moment Horizonte disappeared from the dial.. However, I managed to bring it to the web many years later. At that point, I felt that my chances of taking the big step and putting it on the air were practically zero, because an important partner was needed who would also provide the necessary structure and financial support for a company of this caliber. That is where Perfil becomes a fundamental actor for the project of the return of radio.
—What was the reception from listeners?
—The response from the public has been formidable and even ineffable.: You can find the videos of the day of return on social networks and see people crying from the emotion of the start of the broadcast! Our audience is very special. It is made up of the kind of people who put on the Horizonte shirt in 1986 and have never taken it off… They still wear it and wear it with pride! Horizonte generated in its listeners a phenomenon that has not occurred with other radio stations: a kind of sense of belonging as powerful as that of the first day.
—What is the benefit of having a new website and returning to the dial?
—It seems essential to me to be able to combine both things. If we take radio as a business unit in a world that continues to evolve, I believe that in these times it is of capital importance to be able to work in the development and integration of new technologies that improve the user experience and facilitate access through the platform that the listener prefers. Today people listen to radio streaming by using portable and desktop devices, while choosing to tune to an AM or FM frequency when driving your car.
—What do you think the future will be like for this FM that changed the history of radio in Argentina?
—Here I can’t be as objective as I would like… because it means a lot to me. My dream is to take it as high as I can. See her shine once more like in those times. That said, I want to point out that Horizonte was a pioneering radio station in the history of our country at a time when new technologies did not exist and, consequently, the public turned massively to this medium. Today, however, the challenge becomes superlative given that the listener listens to what he wants, when he wants and even—in many cases—without advertisements or ad breaks.
However, and perhaps returning to my lack of objectivity, I imagine a bright future, full of good things because We are putting our soul into ensuring that Horizonte once once more occupies the place it deserves..
