The festival district has too few bicycle parking spaces.
Cycling festival guests – do they exist? Secure. Now the lack of parking space for bicycles is causing trouble for this group. “On July 24, I attended a dress rehearsal and wanted to park my bike in Hofstallgasse at 11:30 a.m.,” says Margit Rihl from Schallmoos: “I was appalled that there wasn’t a single bike stand under the trees. There were bikes all over the place around.”
Rihl outlined this grievance in an email to cycling coordinator Peter Weiss. At first, the woman from Salzburg thought it was because the festival opened at the same time, but the situation hasn’t changed to this day. “In the meantime I’ve been to several performances and have found that the bike chaos in Hofstallgasse is a disaster.” In Furtwängler Park there are still too few bike racks. It is then often impossible to get your bike out of the several rows of wedged wheels without damaging something, says Rihl.
She suggests making the inner courtyard of the university available for bicycles as well. “Selected” cars are always allowed to park there, and the yard is almost never full. You might easily use at least half of the space for bike racks, preventing the chaos of bikes criss-crossing the area. “The cycling festival visitors also deserve to be able to park their bikes safely in the immediate vicinity of the festival halls.”
The city’s cycling coordinator responded within a short time. The garden department recently sown a lawn at the previous location and the roots of the trees there were also damaged, so there are no longer any parking spaces there. These were moved to the gravel area near the Triangel restaurant: “I like Rihl’s suggestion to set up additional bike racks in the courtyard of the university and I will follow it.”
