Radar enforcement and road safety on the E411 construction site

A major construction site has been installed on the E411 between Daussoulx and Thorenbais-Saint-Trond for 8 months. The speed is limited to 70 kilometers per hour and a radar has been installed at the entrance to the site to control motorists, and the least we can say is that it works. 33,000 vehicles have already been flashed, which represents an average of 122 offenses per day. According to this motorist, this is not surprising. “I’m going 70 miles an hour, and I get passed everywhere“.

However, a sign informs of the presence of the radar, which is also clearly visible on the side of the road. So our team decided to do the test by setting the cruise control to 70 km/h and counting the cars that will exceed it. Result? Over the 10 kilometers of work, 38 motorists drove faster than the authorized limit at speeds that were sometimes far too high.

The duration of the construction site perhaps partly explains the impatience of drivers, but for Belinda Demattia, the spokesperson for the Walloon road safety agency, there is no question of increasing the regulatory speed. “During a construction site, the configuration of the road no longer allows driving at high speed, which is why the speed is reduced. Workers can work there day or night and in the event of a high-speed accident, their chances of survival are zero.“.

Motorists will still have to be patient since the end of the work is scheduled for the end of next year. Remember that in Wallonia, road accidents on construction sites cause 4 deaths and 175 injuries each year.
