GTD is no longer the acronym for a sporty-looking diesel Golf. Ford appropriated it to apply it to a delirious machine. What you have in front of you is a Mustang that will bring to the roads a series of technical solutions borrowed from the all-new Mustang GT3, which will participate in the 24 Hours of Le Mans next year. Objective: complete a lap of the northern loop of the Nürburgring in less than 7 minutes. To achieve this, the engineers equipped the car with a specially developed engine: a supercharged 5.2-litre V8, equipped with dual intakes, and releasing more than 800 hp at some 7,500 rpm. But power is obviously not his only weapon.
Chassis and aero
As we can see, the car has benefited from very intense aerodynamic work, which notably includes a flat carbon bottom and movable flaps in the nose. The huge rear wing is also active. Next, Ford tackled the weight. The front fenders, bonnet, roof, trunk lid, door sills, front spoiler and diffuser are made of carbon, as are certain elements of the cabin, of which no photo has yet been published. And on the chassis side, the most telling modification concerns the rear suspension made up of arms connected to the shock absorbers mounted behind the bench seat, at least if it had not been removed.
The customer can choose between forged aluminum or magnesium rims, which hide a Brembo carbon-ceramic braking system. It is therefore truly a beast of a race that Ford will produce in a limited series, and will market at a price of around $300,000. As we said in the intro, we are clearly in the world of the Porsche 911 GT3 RS. We can’t wait to see if the Mustang can approach the time it set last year on the Ring: 6’49”328.
