Racial riots intensified in the Indian state of Manipur

Ethnic clashes intensified in the Indian state of Manipur. Due to the tense situation, more than 70 people have been killed, hundreds injured and 30 thousand have been displaced.

The Indian Army has deployed around 10,000 soldiers and a heavy contingent of military personnel in Manipur. The Modi government also imposed Section 144 by suspending internet services for about 3 million people in the state for 5 days. On May 28, 2023 at around 2 am, miscreants attacked 5 localities of Manipur (Sekmai, Sogno, Kumbi, Phateng and Seru) on Modi Sarkar’s EMA. In the attack, 5 people including 1 policeman were killed while 12 people were injured.

India’s Hindu nationalist party BJP-led government has issued ‘Shoot at sight’ orders to enforce the curfew. Due to this tense situation in Manipur, more than 30 thousand citizens have been forced to take refuge in nearby states. The clashes have turned into a war-like situation. Eyewitnesses told international media reporters that houses and churches were also burned.

A young tribal leader of Imphal while talking to the international media said that our house was vandalized which forced us to stay in the military camp. “Unfortunately, what is happening here shows that these attacks are very well planned.”

The Congress party has accused the BJP government of conspiring to increase the risk of war in the region instead of resolving the ethnic crisis. The Communist Party of India (CPI) has alleged that these incidents of violence are the result of a policy of dividing people on religious lines. On the one hand, Manipur is burning, and on the other hand, the indifference of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who are ignoring the situation and focusing on the state election campaign in Karnataka.
