The 24-hour test: 540 km and 19:30 in the saddle

On May 6, he went into US mode. Rhythm, pace, refueling, sleep: everything has been worked on. A Chambéry – Gap in 24 hours, via the south, with 3700m of elevation gain, 540 terminals on the clock for 7:30 p.m. in the saddle, 69,000 pedal strokes and… 15 minutes in the arms of Morpheus.

With his team – an obligation to be able to line up at the start – of five people including a physiotherapist, Christophe d’Alu, licensed at Chambéry Cyclisme Compétition, has tied up his business well, with extremely dense preparation. Winter races, a last “cyclo” on June 4 on the long route of the Motz Chautagne Tour (115 km for 2,795 m of D+ in 4h17 ‘) for a total of 9500 terminals. D’Alu is ready!

The RAAM: 4800 km, 35000m of elevation in less than 288 hours

The American-style event will give d’Alu the opportunity to cover 4800 km, to cross 12 states including Colorado at an altitude of 3300m (35000m of vertical drop in total). All to be erased in 12 days – or 288 hours maximum – to finish and be the finisher of the craziest event in the world. In comparison, the riders of the Tour de France 2023 will cover 3400km (with 5100m of elevation) in 21 days. The challenge is therefore daunting.

Records: Strasser in 7 days and 15 hours

The Slovenian Jure Robic has won the event five times while the Austrian Christoph Strasser, winner six times, holds the record in 7 days, 15 hours and 56 minutes. He completed the race twice in less than eight days. XXL performance. The defending champion, Australian Allan Jefferson, finished in ten days and 15 minutes.

Note that the French record is 11 days, 2 hours and 48 minutes. Arnaud Manzanini has held the benchmark brand since 2015. He is also the organizer of the French version of this mythical race created in 1982 (41 years of existence). In 2009, Dominique Briand also crossed the line in the time of 11 days and 9 hours.

The Savoyard from Montagnole Christophe d’Alu knows where he is putting his wheels. It’s up to him to write his story and become a Race Across America legend.
