Raccoo Venture: A Nostalgic Homage to Classic 3D Platformers from the 1990s

Back in the 1990s, we were almost inundated with great 3D platformers, but sadly, the genre was dying. It’s a shame, and that’s why it’s good for someone to keep the memory alive by making a game like this that pays homage to the old games. Raccoo Venture is one such game that brings back memories of Pandemonium.
For a game of this type, the game is structured in a traditional way; you progress through a series of mostly linear paths, jumping on platforms, solving simple puzzles, activating buttons, throwing fruits and bombs, and defeating different types of enemies.
As is common in this type of game, there are a lot of hidden items to find. Here, however, they’re usually so well hidden that you can easily complete a level without ever finding any of them. This is a bit unfortunate, because unusually, it’s these hidden items that are used to unlock new levels.

These hidden items shouldn’t be that important, but rather things you want to find rather than be forced to find. As a result, you end up replaying many of the levels you’ve already completed while carefully searching the map to collect enough hidden items to be able to move on. It’s not particularly interesting.
There are a few other places you’re curious regarding game design. Another example is that instead of equipping you with a specific number of lives, you lose 50 coins each time you die. However, these coins are plentiful around so you’re never really in danger of running out of them, which makes you wonder why you do this and why you don’t have a specific number of lives, just like games of this type from the ’90s.
The graphics in Raccoo Venture are simple but beautiful and colorful, and they work the way they should. Due to the fixed camera, it can be a little difficult at times to judge distance and see landing locations on different platforms, but it’s not a huge problem. The soundtrack is good, the soundtrack is appropriate, and the sound effects are good.

I’m a bit torn regarding Raccoo Venture, as it’s a good take on a classic platformer from the ’90s, with good variety and some good ideas, but also has some slightly odd design choices that make the game unnecessarily difficult. Understandable and sometimes frustrating.
I had hoped to enjoy my time with Raccoo Venture more than I did because we need old-school platformers like the ones we saw in the 1990s, but Raccoo Venture never quite delivers. That said, Raccoo Venture might be for you, if you’re a big fan of classic ’90s platformers, and for just over £12, you can’t go wrong.
