20 years ago, Thomas Gratzer took over the Rabenhof Theater in Vienna’s Landstraße and since then has given the house its very own profile. The anniversary season is now under the motto “Rock’n’Roll im Gemeindebau”, the program includes Handke’s “Audience Insult” with the band Kreisky, the theater debut of Conchita aka Tom Neuwirth and a Nestroy adaptation by Yasmin Hafedh aka Yasmo. The state artists and Andreas Vitásek will also be there again.
Gratzer is particularly pleased that, in his 20th season, he is “entering completely new terrain” and “hammering in pegs”. It starts on September 27 with Peter Handke’s classic “Beating the Audience”, which Matthias Jodl and the indie cult band Kreisky want to put in a new light and make it attractive for young audiences. Tom Neuwirth is also on stage in “Luziwuzi. Ich bin die Kaiserin” as the eccentric Habsburg Archduke Ludwig Viktor with Florian Carove and Gerhard Kasal Kvam (premiering on February 15, 2024). New ground is also broken with Nestroy’s “Chief Evening Wind” when the rapper Yasmo is on stage in her directorial debut together with Raphael Rameis and David Scheid, among others, to give the Nestroy classic a feminist spin (April 3, 2024).
From March 4, Michael Nikbakhsh and Klaus Oppitz will address a newly developed conspiracy theory in their political satire “Katzen”, while Thomas Maurer will attempt a comedic approach to the author from January 17 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Franz Kafka’s death (“Maurer. Kafka. Komisch Speaking of Kafka: on four evenings in March, Sven Regener examines Kafka works from “America” to “The Metamorphosis” in a festival marathon.
Andreas Vitásek, who will be presenting his new program “Spätlese” from November 7th, will be laughed at again. And “knee-deep in glamour” is Angelika Hager, alias Polly Adler, who wants to provide “crisis emergency aid” in her new show (premier: October 22). The state artists also have a new program in their quiver, bringing “Old Dogs – New Tricks” to the stage from October 10th. Youngsters can look forward to Roman Freigaßner-Hauser’s reinterpretation of “The Frog King” (from March 12) and a new chapter in the “Classics for Kids” series, which this time focuses on Herakles (premier: January 11).
According to Gratzer, the season that is now coming to an end went “very, very well” in autumn 2022, despite initial corona concerns, as he emphasized in the APA interview. Fortunately, with 85.2 percent occupancy and 247 performances, the company is a long way from the motto “50 percent is the new sold out”, which was ironically proclaimed in the theater sector at the time. In total, more than 61,000 spectators were welcomed in the season that ended on June 17th. The district series, which was carried out for the first time, was so successful that another location will be added in the coming season with the VHS event center in the Per-Albin-Hansson settlement in Favoriten. The 14 performances in Liesing, Floridsdorf and Donaustadt were attended by 4,448 people, which corresponds to a district utilization rate of 76 percent. “Considering that we started here from scratch a year ago, that’s a huge success!”
