Rabbit Abuse in North Point: Association for the Protection of Animals Takes Action

[Animal News]Our newspaper reported yesterday that someone put rabbits in cages outside in hot weather and let them suffer. After receiving the report, the Association for the Protection of Animals came to the scene today to understand and warned the rabbit owners not to put rabbits outside or in the sun. In the place where the direct exposure occurred, the owner of the rabbit then contacted the Aixie to voluntarily abandon the rabbit. The Aixie will accept the rabbit and inspect it. If everything is normal, the rabbit will be adopted. Winky, a volunteer at the Rabbit Cottage who followed up the incident, said that the rabbit owner’s way of raising rabbits has hurt the rabbits, and abandoning them is a good thing for the rabbits. I hope the rabbits can live a healthy life in the future.

It happened because a citizen asked for help on the Internet, saying that her sister, a worker, received a photo from a friend, showing that someone in the Fuhua Mansion in North Point had put the rabbits together in a cage in the open air. It is known that they have kept them for a week. Leave outdoors all day. Winky, a volunteer at Rabbit Cottage, said that she contacted the Society for the Protection of Animals following receiving related requests for help. She pointed out that rabbits have a high body temperature and only rely on their ears to dissipate heat. In the weather of more than 30 degrees, it is easy to suffer from heat stroke, which can be life-threatening. Winky also pointed out that the cage used by the owner was not correct. He pointed out that this kind of cage might easily cause the rabbits to break their feet and get foot sores, and there was no grass.

In response to this newspaper’s inquiry, Aixie stated that the inspector of Aixie arrived at a unit in North Point today and found that someone put a rabbit with a rabbit cage in the open air, next to a water source and additional shade. However, Aixie does not recommend placing rabbits outdoors or in direct sunlight for a long time in hot weather, so it is strongly recommended and warned by rabbit owners. Inspector Aixie also explained to the rabbit owners other areas that need improvement, including cleaning and the need for long-term food, hay and cushions.

The owner of the rabbit later contacted the Aixie to voluntarily abandon the rabbit. The Aixie will accept the rabbit and inspect it according to the normal procedure. If all is well, adoption will be arranged for the rabbit.

The body temperature of rabbits is generally as high as 38 to 39 degrees. They are more resistant to cold but are very afraid of heat. Some veterinarians once pointed out that the temperature that rabbits generally feel comfortable is 20 to 22 degrees. According to the “Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Ordinance”, anyone who causes animals to suffer unnecessary pain is guilty of an offense and can be sentenced to a maximum of 3 years in prison and a fine of 200,000 yuan.
