Rabat Seawater Desalination Project: ONEE Launches Call for Tenders for Detailed Studies

ONEE has launched a call for tenders to carry out detailed and specific studies of the seawater desalination project in the Rabat area. They must also include studies of drinking water supply.

The office intends to mobilize an envelope of 8.5 million Dirhams for this project, the capacity of the future desalination station will be defined according to the analysis of the needs and resources balance sheet. The study area concerns Rabat, Salé, Kénitra, Skhirat, Témara, Bouznika, Ben Slimane, Sidi Yahia Zaers, Tamesna, Ain Aouda, Rommani, Mehdia, Sidi Taibi, Bouknadel as well as the rural areas attached to it.

The studies, which must be carried out within a period not exceeding 14 months, include the sea water intake, the desalination station, the desalinated water reservoirs, the brine discharge works and the water supply. drinking water to the cities concerned.

A few days earlier, the Minister of Water and Equipment, Nizar Baraka announced the launch of studies relating to the construction of a seawater desalination station in Tangier. It will have a production capacity of 70 million m3.

Remember that Morocco’s strategy for mitigating the water deficit is to reach around twenty stations by 2030, for an overall capacity of 1.3 billion cubic meters of treated water per year.

Currently, the overall installed capacity of 12 existing seawater desalination plants amounts to 179 million m3 per year, to which are added some 37 million m3 from the desalination of brackish water. This production capacity has just been reinforced by 110 million m3 thanks to the two stations of Safi and Jorf Lasfar built by the Office Chérifien des Phosphates with a view to supplying the towns of Safi and El Jadida with drinking and industrial water. .
