O Ai Pinfrom Humane, put the spotlight on a category of products that promises to displace smartphones: devices powered on a large scale by artificial intelligence.

Ai Pin itself already has competition: r1yes rabbit — a wearable gadget that uses AI to change the way users interact with apps.

#CES2024

Featured in Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2024, rabbit’s first launch is a compact square device that aims to be the intermediary between the user and their smartphone, be it an iPhone or another device. The idea is that, instead of interacting directly with applications to do something, r1 — from its rabbit OS operating system — will do it for you.

Using a large language model (large language model, or LLM) — which also powers systems like ChatGPT and similar ones — r1 will receive commands from the user and execute instructions in an app. For example, when requesting a ride to a supermarket, r1 can interact with Uber for you.

The r1 itself is quite simple, being comprised of a 2.88-inch touchscreen in a rounded square that was designed with the teenage engineering, which also incorporates a rotating camera. It is powered by a 2.3GHz MediaTek processor with 4GB of memory, 128GB of internal storage and promises all-day battery life.

The gadget also has a robust scroll wheel, as well as a side button designed to press to talk. At the top are a pair of microphones, and while there’s room for a SIM card, it doesn’t appear to be able to be used as a smartphone at the moment.

By your concept, r1 is following almost the same path as Ai Pin — being more aimed at controlling applications that a user may already use, rather than using an AI to perform the task itself. At $200, it’s also significantly cheaper than Humane’s option, and to top it off, it doesn’t require a subscription.

While Rabbit may have a hard time convincing many to move away from their smartphones, the R1’s considerably reasonable price might give it an advantage at launch. In fact, according to the manufacturer, the 10 thousand units initially available were sold out on the first day.

When we started building r1, we said internally that we would be happy if we sold 500 devices on launch day. In 24 hours, we have already surpassed that by 20x!

The expected delivery date is April to May 2024.

As highlighted in the post above, r1 is available to orderwith deliveries scheduled from April.
