“Talking regarding how many percentages are needed, advertising, giving money for advertising is a very strange thing, I don’t even understand the logic,” the politician told Radio News on Friday. – We must clearly understand when and how much money is needed. This is what every farmer does when dealing with his finances.”
He spoke this way at the end of March following some business associations and companies announced the “4 percent” initiative, which aims to encourage society and politicians to agree on 4 percent. gross domestic product (GDP)-oriented defense financing.
The campaign was initiated by the Lithuanian Business Confederation, the startup association “Unicorns Lithuania” and the Confederation of Lithuanian Industrialists.
“No, I don’t participate in this campaign because I don’t understand it very well. (…) The Government and the Ministry of National Defense have to answer the question of who needs and how much money. They cannot answer those questions, they do not say,” said the head of the Union of Lithuanian Peasants and Greens.
“There are entrepreneurs who say they need even more money. Maybe they are needed, I am not once morest it being 4 percent, maybe there should be 9, but it must be clear why they are needed,” he added.
R. Karbauskis claimed that he is contributing to the Drones Union, a charity and support fund initiated by him, which, together with the country’s scientists, aims to take care of the production of drones needed for national defense. He called it a “very specific” initiative.
In order to increase the fixed funding of national defense from 2.5 percent. up to 3 percent GDP, the Ministry of Finance prepared and presented four alternatives to the partners of the ruling coalition, representatives of business and trade unions, how to collect additional income for the state budget.
These proposals will be considered by politicians and social partners in the next few weeks, and the Government hopes to announce specific proposals in mid-April.
