A Test of Endurance and Skill
What makes this marathon stage unique is the mandatory overnight stop. Interview with Rokas Baciuška: Navigating the Challenges of the Dakar Rally Marathon Stage
By [Yoru Name],Archyde News Editor
As the 2024 Dakar Rally continues to test the limits of endurance and skill,Lithuanian driver Rokas Baciuška and his co-driver Oriolas Mena have emerged as standout performers in the grueling marathon stage. Despite the challenges, the duo finished the first day in a provisional fifth place, trailing stage winner Yazeed Al-Rajhi by just 11 minutes and 17 seconds. We sat down with Rokas Baciuška to discuss his experience so far, the unique demands of the marathon stage, and his outlook for the remainder of the rally.
Archyde: Rokas, thank you for taking the time to speak with us.The marathon stage is known for being one of the toughest challenges in the Dakar Rally. How are you and Oriolas feeling after the first day?
Rokas Baciuška: Thank you for having me. It’s been a tough but rewarding day. The marathon stage is always a huge test, not just for the car but for the team as well. Oriolas and I are feeling good, though. We’ve been working hard to stay focused and manage the challenges as they come. Finishing fifth on the first day is a solid result, but we know there’s still a long way to go.
Archyde: The marathon stage requires competitors to stop overnight without any mechanical assistance from their teams. How do you prepare for that kind of self-reliance?
Rokas Baciuška: It’s definitely a unique aspect of the marathon stage. You have to be very strategic about how you approach the race. We make sure to conserve the car as much as possible during the day, avoiding unnecessary risks. At the same time, we carry essential spare parts and tools to handle any issues that might arise. It’s a balance between pushing for speed and ensuring the car can make it through the night.
archyde: The terrain in this year’s Dakar Rally has been notably challenging. What has been the most difficult part of the marathon stage so far?
Rokas Baciuška: The terrain is incredibly varied, which keeps you on your toes. One moment you’re navigating through soft sand dunes, and the next you’re dealing with rocky sections or fast, technical tracks. the most challenging part for us has been maintaining consistency across thes different surfaces. You have to adapt quickly and trust your instincts.
Archyde: Unluckily, some of your fellow Lithuanian competitors have had to withdraw due to injuries or mechanical issues. How does that affect the morale of the team?
Rokas Baciuška: It’s always tough to see your fellow competitors, especially your countrymen, face setbacks. Gediminas Šatkus, Albertas Veliamovičius, and Vladas Jurkevičius are all incredibly talented drivers, and it’s unfortunate that they’ve had to retire. But that’s the nature of the Dakar Rally—it’s unpredictable and unforgiving. Their determination inspires us to keep pushing forward and honour their efforts.
Archyde: You’re currently in a strong position, but the overall standings are still tight. What’s your strategy for the second day of the marathon stage?
Rokas Baciuška: Our strategy is to stay consistent and avoid mistakes. The second day is just as demanding as the first, if not more so, because fatigue starts to set in. We’ll focus on maintaining a steady pace and keeping the car in good condition. If we can do that, I believe we’ll be in a strong position to climb the overall standings.
Archyde: what motivates you to keep going when the challenges of the Dakar Rally feel overwhelming?
Rokas Baciuška: The Dakar Rally is more than just a race—it’s a test of character. Every year, it pushes you to your limits, both physically and mentally. what keeps me going is the passion for what I do and the incredible support from my team, my family, and the fans. Crossing the finish line after overcoming so many obstacles is an indescribable feeling, and that’s what drives me to keep going.
Archyde: Thank you, Rokas, for sharing your insights. We wish you and Oriolas the best of luck for the rest of the rally.
Rokas Baciuška: Thank you! We’ll give it our all.
As the Dakar Rally continues, Rokas Baciuška and Oriolas Mena remain a team to watch. Their resilience and determination embody the spirit of the rally, and their performance in the marathon stage is a testament to their skill and readiness. Stay tuned to Archyde for more updates on their journey and the rest of the Lithuanian competitors.
