Quito Overpass on Rumiñahui Highway to Open January 2025

New Overpass Set to Ease Traffic Congestion in Quito

Exciting news for commuters in Quito! Construction of a highly anticipated overpass on the General Rumiñahui Highway, located at Bridge 8, is progressing smoothly. Officials announced that the overpass is on track for completion by the third week of January 2025. A major milestone has already been achieved with the placement of beams, paving the way for the next phase of the project.

Focus on Connectivity and Safety

Alex Rivera, Director of Roads for the prefecture overseeing the project, explained on Monday, December 9, 2024, that the focus is now on constructing a concrete slab atop the metal framework. This slab will serve as the surface for vehicles traveling on the bridge. Rivera emphasized that the new infrastructure will specifically benefit residents of Conocoto and La Armenia, by providing a direct connection between Lola Quintana Avenue and the General Rumiñahui Highway.

“This will significantly improve traffic flow and safety in the area,” Rivera stated.

Minimizing Disruption During Construction

To accommodate the beam installation, a 12-hour road closure was implemented on Sunday, December 8th. Rivera explained that all relevant traffic authorities coordinated their efforts to ensure a smooth process, and thankfully, no incidents were reported during the closure.

As the project progresses, officials want to minimize any future disruptions to traffic flow. Rivera assured the public that the remaining work will concentrated on the upper portion of the bridge, eliminating the need for further road closures on the General Rumiñahui Highway.

Investing in Faster Commuting Times

The project is expected to significantly impact the daily commute of around 10,000 vehicles that utilize the overpass. The estimated cost of the project is two million dollars, benefiting approximately 30,000 people who live or work in the vicinity. Improved traffic flow will translate into shorter commute times and reduced congestion, benefiting everyone in the area.

When is the projected completion date for the new overpass?
