An important step towards sustainable development:

At the Battery Europe 2024 trade show in Stuttgart, TRUMPF is presenting a new laser process that enables battery manufacturers and carmakers to recycle used or defective batteries from electric vehicles on a large scale for the first time.

TRUMPF is an international company and a world leader in industrial production technology and sheet metal processing technology. The company is a world leader in the market and technology for industrial production machine tools and lasers, and their “software solutions pave the way for the Smart Factory” for the development of high-tech processes.

Raw materials, supply and recycling obligations for batteries.

The valuable raw materials needed to make batteries, such as cobalt, lithium or nickel, can usually only be found in certain parts of the world, and without them, there would be no batteries at present. For example, cobalt is mainly mined in the Democratic Republic of Congo, while lithium is mainly produced in Australia and South America. However, the extraction of these raw materials is costly and not always sustainable. Manufacturers also face long and uncertain supply chains.

In addition, the EU plans to increase the battery recycling rate to 90% in the coming years, which means that starting in 2030, the industry will need to recycle about 570,000 tons of battery materials each year.

Battery recycling is not only environmentally friendly, but can now also be carried out economically thanks to laser technology.

TRUMPF has developed a laser system that safely cuts through used batteries and removes valuable raw materials from the battery foil. Until now, disassembling electric car batteries has been a manual process, but this will now be a thing of the past.

“Battery recycling is not only environmentally friendly, but thanks to laser technology it can now be done economically,” says Hagen Zimer, CEO of TRUMPF Laser Technology.

TRUMPF can draw on its extensive expertise in laser welding and cutting for the production of electric vehicle batteries. TRUMPF has been working with leading automotive and battery manufacturers for many years and has incorporated this experience into the development of new processes.

In the future, laser technology could play a key role in battery recycling. In fact, it is currently the only way to ensure efficient and automated dismantling. After dismantling, the raw materials can be sorted, while the battery components that are still usable can be separated and reused directly.
