WATERTOWN — Quick starts and solid finishes carried No. 4 Watertown to a 3-0 Eastern South Dakota Conference volleyball sweep over No. 5 Pierre on Thursday night in the Civic Arena.
The Arrows (10-3 overall and 6-0 in the ESD), won 25-122, 25-19 and 25-20 over the Governors (8-3, 1-2).
In each set, Watertown grabbed the early lead (including 6-0 in the second set and 4-0 in the third set) and saw Pierre battle back before the Arrows used a late surge to get the win.
“This was a big win for us tonight. One of the team’s goals is winning an ESD title so we are one step closer,” said Watertown head coach Rosemary Bellum. “Small goals every day, game, week to reach the top goal of a state tournament trip.”
Emery Thury had a huge game for the Arrows, smacking 19 kills to go along with two solo blocks and six digs. Eve Hauger and Carter Jurrens each made seven kills. Jurrens also added one solo and two block assists and Hannah Herzog three block assists.

“Addi Johnston and Paige were impressive in the back row, picking up balls that the Governors through were down and Miranda did a nice job of dishing assists to each of our hitters,” said Bellum.
“We played a much cleaner game tonight with only five service errors to compared to 14 on Tuesday. We also ended with six block kills. We also touched more attacks, which slows down the ball for our passes to put up a perfect pass. Then we can run a quicker offense.”
The Arrows host Sioux Falls Roosevelt at 7 p.m. on Tuesday before hitting the road until the regular-season finale on Nov. 2.
