BANGUI, Central African Republic, August 29, 2024 /African Media Agency (AMA)/- In partnership with the Ministry of Youth and Sports, MINUSCA has built and rehabilitated socio-cultural and sports centres in different districts of the city of Bangui. These initiatives, which are part of the Quick Impact Projects, are transforming the lives of young people.
These youth centers, designed to be activity spaces for young people, offer multipurpose spaces dedicated to sports, culture, and training. Each center is equipped with meeting rooms, training rooms, performance rooms, a library as well as relaxation areas, thus providing an environment conducive to the development of young people.
Before the construction of these centres, youth activities took place in unsuitable places, such as school halls and churches. Vianney Gueremonzere, Chairman of the Management Committee of the Youth Centre of the 6th Arrondissement of Bangui, recalls these challenges. “We encountered many difficulties when it came to organising activities that brought together all the young people in our district. Sometimes, we had to use improvised spaces to carry out our initiatives,” he said.
Regis Kossengha, director of the socio-cultural and sports center of the 4th Arrondissement of the city, underlines the impact of these centers: “We offer training in English every Saturday and Sunday, allowing young people to improve their language skills. A reading club has also been set up to promote culture and intellectual exchange. These initiatives contribute to creating a safe and stimulating environment for young people.”
The positive influence of these centers is already being felt. Romuald Gérard Nganawe, President of the Youth of the 4th arrondissement, testifies to the notable change in his neighborhood. “Previously, the 4th arrondissement was known for its security problems. Today, thanks to the youth center, we see a significant improvement, with a reduction in banditry and a calmer atmosphere,” he said.
These youth centres go beyond simply organising cultural and sporting activities. They have become focal points for social cohesion and active community participation in the life of their locality. Asta Adramane, President of the 3rd arrondissement blind association, says: “We used to hold our meetings in the Magalé neighbourhood, but now we have access to a room in one of the youth centres. This allows us to hold our meetings in a regular and organised manner.”
The initiative to build these youth houses in Bangui highlights the importance of the commitment of the Central African government and MINUSCA to youth. These projects demonstrate that when youth are supported and valued, the positive effects resonate well beyond the community’s borders.
