Question to the doctor: “I smoke, what sports can I do?”

What sports can smokers do?

To get rid of the above negative effects, the first thing you need to do is quite obvious: stop smoking. After that, bronchial patency, lung volume, pulse and other indicators of the health of the respiratory and cardiovascular systems will gradually return to normal.

– Endurance sports when the heart rate reaches critical values during exercisecan be dangerous in combination with smoking. Such loads are fraught with catastrophic consequences, up to sudden death. Health-threatening situations during training are usually associated with existing cardiovascular diseases (coronary heart disease, heart rhythm disturbances), which all smokers are at risk, the doctor explains.

Smokers, as people at increased risk for cardiovascular disease, are suitable for moderate exercise, in addition, regular exercise helps to quit smoking more easily, that is, to endure the withdrawal syndrome following quitting tobacco.

These include:

  • Swimming. It helps to increase the volume of the lungs, increase their elasticity, endurance, helps to normalize pressure and improve blood circulation.

  • Yoga, breathing exercises help strengthen the respiratory system, restore mental balance, reduce anxiety.

  • Daily aerobic exercise for 30 minutes strengthen the cardiovascular system, provide ventilation of the lungs, normalize blood pressure. These include cycling, dancing, walking, jogging.

But it is important to remember – despite the fact that dosed physical activity is undoubtedly beneficial for the body, it will not be able to neutralize the harm from smoking.

– Before you start regularly playing sports, you should consult a cardiologist to assess your cardiovascular risk. Also today there are special studies that will help determine the maximum allowable physical activity, as well as identify contraindications to sports activities and help achieve high results, the doctor says.

One of them is ergospirometry. The study consists in assessing respiratory and cardiovascular parameters during physical activity. For healthy people, the test will help determine what level of load will be training (effective), and for patients with cardiovascular diseases – what load will be acceptable and most useful.
