Question about Himarra, open line with Beirut 2024-08-09 02:02:05

The Greek side shows considerable interest in the repeated elections in the Municipality of Heimarra. Diplomatic sources call on Tirana to respond to allegations of unfairness in election process after his victory Vangelis Tavou.

“The complaints made by members of the Greek National Minority in Albania regarding the conditions for holding the repeated municipal elections in the Municipality of Heimarra, in particular regarding the demographic alteration of the electoral body and the denial of the constitutional right to vote to thousands of citizens of Heimarra, under the pretext of of the expiry of their Identity Cards, raise serious doubts about the integrity of the process” characteristically mention the government sources about the victory of Vangelis Tavos. They point out that “the democratic principle and the European acquis require the Albanian Authorities to evaluate and respond to all reports related to the integrity of the elections”.

Electoral representatives of Omonia who spoke to SKAI contented themselves with commenting meaningfully that “terrorism won in Himarra”.

It is noted that Vangelis Tavos, his chosen one Edi Ramais the winner of the election for the new mayor of Heimarra.

On the Middle East front, according to information from competent sources, until yesterday none of the 3,500 citizens of Greek origin living in Lebanon (plus 1,500 dependents) had submitted a request to the Greek embassy in Beirut for assistance to leave the country.

The information from the Greek embassy stated that there is no panic, nor fears of a general strike or conflict, as the skirmishes and hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah in recent years have been recorded in the southern regions of the country, i.e. on the border with Israel.

Also, it is estimated that it is almost certain that in the coming days there will not be any aggressive action or escalation that will include Beirut, where the very large majority of citizens of Greek origin live.

According to the ambassador to Lebanon, the situation at the airports is not what is being reported by the media, as reported by public television.

Obviously, there are problems because flights have been reduced and many flights continue to be canceled even today, but by no means is there panic or too great a tendency to flee the country.

In the operational part, information from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicates that a Greek frigate is in the area, as part of a wider force, which, if necessary, will participate in an evacuation operation. “We are by no means at this point,” the same source tells ERT, adding that any evacuation operation will also include Cyprus.

It is noted that the people of Lebanon, including the Greeks, are used to such confrontations between the country and Israel, they know how to protect themselves, and above all they know which areas are included in such a possible escalation of the situation.
